Hey guys I just bought a 19' Sea Pro bay boat with a 2002 Vmax HPDI 150 Yammy on it. The engine is spotless with 380 hours on it.

No corrosion and very well taken care of. It runs purrrfect too. Well, I want to keep it that way. What has been the reputation of these engines?

What do I need to do to keep it running and looking great? I noticed that there is no fuel/water separator before the bulb on the fuel line. Does the engine need one? Also, doesnt the engine have 2 or 3 filters on it for the fuel already? Im either running ethanol free fuel in it or 89 octance street fuel treated with marine Sta Bil. Is that stuff pretty good?

Whats the best sticky stuff to spray on the engine to prevent corrosion? What does everyone use? Should I do the water pump?

He said it has never been done. Also, how often do yall change the oil/grease in the lower unit? Is there an opinion on whats the best fluid to use?

Anything else im not thinking of? Oh, what about flushing the engine? Should I just use the host connection or hook ear muffs up to it? I want to make sure I flush it the best I can! Thanks for the help guys! Run non-ethanol if you can. I can't speak for the StaBil as my boat has never had ethanol in it.

Change the water pump. Get the kit from Andy at SIM. You can find him in the vendor secion here. Install the water separator now. There's three filters on the engine not counting the micro fiters in the high pressure fuel pump. Any marine anti-corrosion spray will work (Corrosion Block HD, CRC HD corrosion inhibitor, Boesheild T9 etc.). Also, change the plugs if you don't know when they were changed last.

Get them at the auto parts store instead of the Yamaha dealer. That's a good engine, just keep good clean fuel in it and change the filters regularly.

I've never had a single issue with mine and have about 400 hours on it. I never service it myself, goes to a Yamaha tech every year. He changes the plugs every other year, changes the lower unit oil every year, and sprays everything down each year. Last year he cleaned a bunch if connections and either cleaned or replaced a sensor that he said should be done every couple of years - cant remember which one tho. I'll try to find out. He used to own the same motor and charters so put a ton of hours on his and knows it really well. Thanks for the replies guys.

That water seperator just goes right in line before the fuel bulb correct? Is there a good place to buy one here online at a better price than a store around town? Also, are there different brands that are better than others? The plugs look brand new and he said he just changed them a couple months ago. I will look into the water pump from Andy. I've done them with my dad before on old johnsons and his newer honda 4 stroke.

Are they about the same? Also is there a good write up anywhere on how to do all the filters or are they pretty easy to get to?

Thanks for the help! I got some redline S1 because I read on many different forums that it has the most PEA (polyether amines) out of all the fuel system cleaners out there. I read it does wonders on carbon and keep everything squeaky clean. I also got some CRC 656 for corrosion, royal purple marine grease for the lower unit, and some star tron for when I have to leave fuel in the boat for a while. What about the fuel water seperators? Whats the best? I wanna get on on there as soon as I can!

Also, swell hunter. How often do you have to do your filters on your engines? Is there a write up? Thanks for the help guys! Thanks for the help guys!Over 850 hours on mine, no mechanical problems, run like a fine watch. The 150's and 200's are rock solid motors as they share the same block/components. Evident in the fact that is the only 2 stroke still made by Yamaha(200hp), they discontinued the larger displacement motor. The HPDI's are excellent motors, especially given their power to weight. Do your regular maitinance, that is a given with any marine motor.

And use them, worse thing for any motor is to sit. Rather have a 4 year old motor with 500 hours, then one with 50.

Think there is a write up on water pump replacment, might be a 150hp 4 stroke, but it's the same. If you've done one, you can do these, standard pump. Only ever issue is getting the shaft key out if your replacing the bottom wear plate. Some go smooth, some are a bit more involved. Far as a write up on engine filter, i'm not sure. There's a inlet filter visible in a plastic cup just inside the cowl, that one is pretty self explanatory. Then there is a filter on the bottom of the VST pump, inside the VST(Vapor Seperation Tank).

This one is more involved as removal, but simple and straight forward. Then there is the one coming out of the VST tank, which is an inline style, held on with the crimp bands, you'll see it on top of VST tank.

Best resource I can give you online is boats.net, they have the micro fiche of the motor online so you can see how it all comes apart and all the parts involved. Here's one of the micro fiche on the VST tank, 20 and 28 would be your filters. Hope that helps, Tripper Oh and far as water seperators/filters, I'd run whatever was available locally as long as its Racor or Yamahas. Mine came with Racor S3227's it's a 10 micron filter like Yamaha's.

I have always used ring free as well. I change the spin off water separators and the motor mounted cartridge filters ever 100 hours or once a year. Lower unit oil every 100 hours. My motors are 1200+ hours and never cracked the VST. I like the Yamaha spinoff filters they are larger and have more surface area.Hi- i recently purchased a Pursuit with twin Yammie 150 HPDI's and i'm trying to determine how often the VST's need to have the high pressure filters changed. Not sure if they are in the VST's but after reading this post I'm wondering if when the VST's need to be serviced?

Local dealer told me that the VST filter is an annual service thing. I serviced my own VST filters after the motors started hesitating and running erratically. Also have a Pursuit with twin 150 HPDIs.

Local dealer told me that the VST filter is an annual service thing. I serviced my own VST filters after the motors started hesitating and running erratically.Yup - that's what I was told by my dealer as well - they started up so well this spring that I was thinking of skipping a year but after reading this I think I'll have them do it and learn now how to do it myself as I've had no problems but was told that these engines are pretty 'bullett proof' other than fuel filter issues. Thanks for the help! Has anyone got the diagnostic application and hookup for these engines as I'm hearing they are hard to find and are only available to Yamaha dealers? Has anyone got the diagnostic application and hookup for these engines as I'm hearing they are hard to find and are only available to Yamaha dealers?Mine started up fine in the spring and ran well for a couple of months. Then one day they started running erratically. I researched it and symptoms were VST filters.

Sure enough, I replaced the filters with new ones and the problem went away. When I went to buy the filters and O-rings for the job, dealer parts guy asked if I had done the filters before putting in water. If you are a DIYer at all, you can do the job but it is a pain in the ass.
